Pearson and Billy Bishop Airport Transfers in Toronto
Airport work is not hard driving. It is arithmetic about the hour of day and knowing which door the airport expects a pre-arranged car to use. Both are things you should not have to research.
Toronto has two commercial airports and they could not be more different to run a car to. Pearson is a huge two-terminal international airport out past Highway 427 with a formal pre-arranged pickup system. Billy Bishop is on an island at the foot of Bathurst Street and you cannot drive to the terminal at all.
Almost everything that goes wrong with airport transfers in this city comes from not knowing those two facts.
Pearson: the approach
From downtown, the route is the Gardiner westbound to Highway 427 north and then the terminal exits. From Midtown and North York it is the 401 west to Highway 409, the short spur built to feed the terminals directly. From Etobicoke it is the 427 north from the QEW or the Gardiner, which is the shortest airport run in the city. From the east end it is the DVP north to the 401 west and either the 409 or the 427 depending on how the express lanes are behaving.
Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. Air Canada and its Star Alliance partners are mostly Terminal 1. Most other carriers, including the US airlines and a long list of leisure operators, use Terminal 3. They are signed separately from the moment you turn off the highway and getting it wrong on a departure means a loop back around the airport road with a clock running. Give us the airline and the flight number and it is settled before the day.
Pearson: where a pre-arranged car actually meets you
This is the part people expect to work like a taxi and it does not. Pearson handles pre-arranged car pickups through designated areas rather than the general arrivals curb. The airport lists Door A at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 as the pre-arranged pickup location, with a dispatcher on site, and its instruction to arriving passengers is to go to that area and let the dispatcher know who they are waiting for. Pearson: timing that actually holds
The honest way to think about a Pearson departure is backwards from the terminal door, not forwards from your front door.
- Bloor-Yorkville to Pearson. Mid-morning or early afternoon, plan around thirty-five to forty-five minutes. Between four and six on a weekday, plan an hour and a quarter and do not be surprised by more. Sunday morning it can be half an hour.
- Financial District to Pearson. Similar, with the added variable of getting out of the core and onto the Gardiner. In the afternoon peak the first two kilometres are often the slowest part of the trip.
- Yonge and Eglinton to Pearson. Via the 401 west and the 409, plan thirty-five minutes off-peak and an hour or more in the morning and afternoon peaks. Eglinton Crosstown work has been reshaping the curb lanes along Eglinton for years, so the first stretch is slower than the map thinks.
- North York Centre to Pearson. Straight down the 401 west. Off-peak this is one of the quicker runs in the city. In the peaks the 401 through the north of Toronto is the single most reliable way to lose an hour.
- Etobicoke to Pearson. Short. From the Kingsway, Islington City Centre or Humber Bay the 427 puts you at the terminals quickly at almost any hour, which is why an early flight out of Etobicoke is a civilised experience and an early flight out of Scarborough is not.

Billy Bishop: the island, the tunnel and the pavilion
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport sits on the Toronto Islands. The mainland pavilion is at Eireann Quay, just off Bathurst Street south of Queens Quay, and passengers cross to the terminal either through the pedestrian tunnel under the Western Channel or on the ferry, which the airport describes as one of the shortest crossings in the world at roughly ninety seconds. The airport puts the tunnel walk at under six minutes.
Cars do not cross. Pickup and drop-off happen along the curb outside the mainland pavilion and ferry terminal, which the airport sets out on its to and from page.
Two practical consequences. On a departure, the drop time has to include the crossing and security, so being at Eireann Quay is not the same as being at the gate. On an arrival, the car is timed for when you surface on the mainland side rather than for wheels-down, and the driver holds for the walk.
The compensation is the location. From King West, the Financial District or the Harbourfront hotels the pavilion is minutes away. A morning of meetings on Bay Street and an evening flight to Ottawa or Montreal is one of the easiest days in Toronto to run — as long as the driver knows that Bathurst south of Lake Shore backs up when a ferry unloads and when Exhibition Place has an event on.
Delays, early arrivals and the things that move
Give us the flight number at the time of booking. Not the scheduled landing time, the flight number. Arrival times move, and a car planned around a number you read three weeks ago is a car in the wrong place.
What tends to happen in practice: international arrivals at Pearson clear customs and baggage at wildly different speeds depending on the hour and how many wide-bodies landed together, so the gap between landing and reaching Door A can be twenty minutes or an hour. Domestic and US preclearance arrivals are usually faster. Billy Bishop is fastest of all, which is precisely why the tunnel walk is the variable that matters there.

Luggage, honestly
Three Audi SUVs: a 2024 blue Q7, a 2023 black Q7 and a 2027 black Q9. Four to five passengers with airport luggage. A family of four with four checked bags and carry-ons fits. Five adults each with a large case and a carry-on does not, and it is better to hear that on the phone than to discover it at Door A with a flight to catch. Both directions, and the corridor
Departures and arrivals are both handled, across the corridor from Oakville through Toronto to Oshawa. That covers the Oakville and Mississauga QEW communities on the west side, all of Toronto, and the Durham towns east through Pickering, Ajax and Whitby. An eastern GTA pickup for an early Pearson departure is an early start, and we will say the honest time rather than a comfortable one.
